Behind Green Lights (1946)
Plot: The bullet-ridden corpse of a private detective and blackmailer named Walter Bard is found in a car dumped right on the steps of the police headquarters. Police Lieutenant Sam Carson is assigned to the case. Suspicion immediately falls on Janet Bradley, the beautiful daughter of a mayoral candidate, whose name is found in the dead man's appointment book. Janet admits to meeting Bard to retrieve incriminating evidence he was using to blackmail a friend. As Carson investigates, he discovers a conspiracy by a ruthless newspaper owner to exploit the murder to discredit Janet's father before the election. The case is complicated by a corrupt medical examiner who attempts to switch the body, and Carson's growing romantic feelings for Janet, forcing him to untangle a complex web of lies and political intrigue to find the real killer, who turns out to be someone close to the victim.
