Set in rural Italy in 1942, the story follows a poor farming couple, Pietro and Lucia, and Lucia's mute younger sister, Alice. While drawing water from their well, Pietro and Alice accidentally disturb something ancient and alien buried beneath the earth. A strange, otherworldly light and smoke are released. Initially, the family experiences positive changes – Pietro's injured knee heals, Alice regains her speech, and their crops become bountiful. However, this good fortune quickly turns sinister as the mysterious "color" begins to subtly infect the surrounding land and, more horrifyingly, the minds of the family. It drives them into madness, paranoia, and violent desires, transforming their lives into a nightmare of pain, blood, and death.
