One Frightened Night
Year: 1935
Plot: Faced with a looming inheritance tax deadline at midnight, eccentric multimillionaire Jasper Whyte (Charley Grapewin) summons his greedy relatives, attorney, doctor, and housekeeper to his spooky mansion to divide his fortune early. The plans change when a woman shows up claiming to be his long-lost granddaughter, Doris Waverly, who stands to inherit everything. Complications—and murder—arise when a second woman arrives, also claiming to be Doris. When one of the claimants is poisoned, a storm knocks out the lights, and a series of "old dark house" tropes (secret passages, suspicious guests, and baffling clues) put the remaining guests and the true heiress in danger as they try to unmask the killer before the night is over.
