The Headless Horseman (1922)
Plot: Based on Washington Irving's 1820 short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the film tells the tale of Ichabod Crane, a lean, superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut who arrives in the quaint, isolated village of Sleepy Hollow, New York, in 1790. Crane immediately begins to court the wealthy and beautiful young heiress Katrina Van Tassel, which makes him a romantic rival to the strongman of the town, Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt. After a party at the Van Tassel homestead where Brom tells the terrifying legend of the Headless Horseman—the ghost of a Hessian soldier decapitated in battle—Crane rides home alone and finds himself pursued by the legendary spectral rider.
