Composer Laurence Rosenthal was born in Detroit, Michigan. He studied piano and composition at the Eastman School of Music and later with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. His symphonic compositions have been premiered by Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philarmonic, among others. He has composed extensively for films and television. He has been nominated for two Oscars. Among his best-known film scores are Ein Fleck in der Sonne (1961), Licht im Dunkel (1962), Becket (1964), Die Insel des Dr. Moreau (1977), Der Mann, den sie Pferd nannten - 2. Teil (1976) and Peter Brook's Gurdjef - Begegnungen mit bemerkenswerten Menschen (1979). He has won seven Emmys for miniseries, including Peter der Große (1986) and Anastasia (1986), as well as for episodes of George Lucas's Die Abenteuer des jungen Indiana Jones (1992).
