Danish actor Søren Hellerup continues to build a distinctive international career spanning film, television, and theatre across Europe, the United States, and South America. Educated at the National Danish Theatre School (Statens Teaterskole), Hellerup combines classical training with decades of global professional experience.
After early work on Danish stages, Hellerup moved abroad, spending many years working in New York and Los Angeles, before relocating to Brazil, where his artistic outlook deepened through extensive theatre work, directing, producing, and teaching. His international screen career includes projects for major platforms such as Netflix, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime, as well as appearances in high-profile international series and feature films.
Hellerup recently returned to Danish cinema with a powerful performance in Isabella Eklöf’s feature film Kalak, which won two major awards at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. His portrayal of the father figure was widely noted for its intensity and emotional complexity, marking a significant homecoming after many years abroad.
Among his international credits is Bingo: The King of the Mornings, Brazil’s official submission for the Academy Awards (2017), further underscoring his presence in globally recognized productions.
In addition to screen work, Søren Hellerup has recently returned to the stage after more than two decades away, while also developing new projects as a writer and collaborator. He is currently co-writing a screenplay based on the novel Lisbon Water Kills and is involved in the Portuguese-Danish feature film Midnight Sun, directed by Vasco Viana.
Now based in Portugal, Søren Hellerup continues to work internationally and is actively reconnecting with the Danish film and theatre landscape, bringing a rare blend of Nordic roots and global perspective to his work.
