Plot: In the late 1920s, ambitious stock market speculator "Lucky" John Hart narrowly escapes the Wall Street Crash of 1929 after taking a reporter's tip and relying on the toss of a lucky coin. As the Great Depression sets in, Hart is approached by unethical lawyers, Simon and Nitto, who persuade him to use his reputation to make a fortune through corrupt receiverships—taking over debt-ridden businesses. Hart agrees, driven partly by greed and his desire to pursue affairs with Nitto's secretary and Elena, the wife of Nitto's nephew, Frank. Their racketeering leads to the suicide of George Harper, whose daughter, Marcia, vows revenge. Marcia and the reporter, Phil "Stu" Stuart, who have fallen in love, work together to expose Hart and his partners, leading to a climactic confrontation fueled by Frank's discovery of his wife's infidelity.
