Hotel Artemis (2018)
In a near-future Los Angeles, a nurse runs a secret, high-tech hotel that serves as a sanctuary for criminals. When a robbery goes wrong, a wounded thief checks into the hotel, setting off a chain of events that forces the hotel's eclectic group of guests and staff to confront their pasts, their loyalties, and their survival instincts.
Hotel Artemis is one of those movies that hits a sweet spot between gritty action and stylish, almost noir-like vibes. The concept is so cool—set in a high-tech, secret hotel for criminals, it feels like a modern take on an old-school crime thriller. Jodie Foster is amazing as the tough, yet vulnerable nurse running the place, and the film’s cast, including Sterling K. Brown and Dave Bautista, all add depth to the chaotic, tension-filled environment. What really stands out is the world-building. The hotel feels like its own character, with its strict rules, hidden layers, and quirky features. It’s a place where criminals come to heal, but also a place where alliances are tested and the stakes are incredibly high. The action is sharp, and the film balances violence with moments of quieter emotional depth, especially with Foster’s character, who has her own past she's trying to escape. While the story isn’t the most groundbreaking, the atmosphere, performances, and unique setting make Hotel Artemis feel fresh. If you like action with a bit of style, some moral complexity, and a little bit of heart, this one’s a fun ride.
