Love Affair
Year: 1939
Plot: French playboy and famous womanizer Michel Marnet (Charles Boyer) and American singer Terry McKay (Irene Dunne) meet as passengers aboard an ocean liner traveling from Europe to New York. Both are engaged to wealthy partners and lead somewhat mercenary, but glamorous, lives. Over the course of the voyage, they fall deeply in love. Before the ship docks, they agree to break off their current engagements, spend six months becoming financially independent (Michel as a painter, Terry as a singer), and then meet at the top of the Empire State Building to begin their life together. On the day of their rendezvous, Terry is tragically struck by a car on her way to the building and is paralyzed. Not wanting to be a burden, she chooses to let Michel believe she simply stood him up, while he, heartbroken and thinking she married her rich fiancé, travels to Europe. They eventually have a chance, fateful reunion, where Terry attempts to conceal her disability, forcing Michel to uncover the heartbreaking truth.
