The Phantom of 42nd Street
Year: 1945
Plot: After attending the debut of a new actress at a Broadway theater, newspaper drama critic Tony Woolrich and his taxi-driver sidekick, Romeo, discover the hanged body of the actress's wealthy uncle outside the theater. Chastised by his editor for failing to cover the crime, Woolrich reluctantly begins his own investigation. As a "Phantom Killer," who leaves mysterious quotes from old plays and wears various period costumes, strikes again and again—each victim connected to the actress's father's old repertory company—the critic must race to solve the string of theatrical murders before the killer claims the girl he loves as their final victim.
