The Sphinx
Year: 1933
Plot: A man is found strangled in the office of an investment company, the latest in a series of similar murders of stockbrokers. In each case, a witness saw the killer and heard him speak as he left the scene. The main suspect is Jerome Breen, a wealthy philanthropist who has an unshakeable alibi: court physicians testify he has been medically proven to be deaf and mute since birth. As Breen uses his disability to mock the police, a determined newspaper reporter, Jack Burton, is convinced of Breen's guilt and races to uncover the truth and the seemingly impossible trick behind the murders, particularly after Breen begins to court Burton's colleague and love interest.
