VIRUS: DAY OF RESURRECTION 1980
Plot: In 1980 (or implied as 1982 in some versions), a genetically engineered virus, MM88, accidentally created by an American geneticist, is stolen and then unintentionally released after a plane crash in the Alps. This virus rapidly amplifies the potency of any other illness it encounters, leading to a global pandemic, sometimes referred to as the "Italian Flu" or "Tibetan Flu." Within seven months, nearly all of humanity is wiped out. The only survivors are a small group of 855 men and eight women (the numbers vary slightly in different cuts) stationed in Antarctica, where the frigid temperatures keep the virus inactive.
Years later, their fragile new society faces a new threat: a predicted massive earthquake in Washington D.C. could trigger the Automated Reaction System (ARS), a doomsday device that will launch the United States' nuclear arsenal. The Soviets also have a similar ARS system. A desperate mission is launched, with a Japanese seismologist and an American major embarking on a perilous journey by submarine to Washington D.C. to deactivate the ARS before it causes a global nuclear exchange, threatening to end what little remains of human life. The film explores themes of human folly, survival, and the destructive nature of Cold War anxieties.
