Plot: Set during the American Civil War, a foreign agent named Nicholas Tower conspires with a guerrilla band to seize control of western territory, specifically aiming to force California to secede from the Union by disrupting communications. Young Bill Hickok, a freight-line agent, earns the nickname "Wild Bill" when he successfully fends off some of the raiders. He is tasked with escorting a valuable gold shipment meant for the Federal war effort. To avoid the raiders, Bill pretends to transport the gold himself but secretly sends it with his friends, horse wrangler Gabby Whitaker and Calamity Jane. However, his fiancée, Louise, attempts to protect him by revealing his true plan to the villainous Tower, who then intercepts the gold and frames Bill for the robbery. After being jailed, Bill escapes, exposes Tower's plot (which is linked to the news of Lincoln's assassination), recovers the gold, and brings the conspirators to justice.
