Palooka
Year: 1934
Plot: Based on the popular comic strip, the film follows Joe Palooka, a naive, country boy whose father was a champion boxer. Joe was raised "clean" by his mother, Mayme, who left his father to avoid the corrupting influences of the boxing lifestyle. When Joe accidentally knocks out a professional boxer, opportunistic manager Knobby Walsh signs him and brings him to the big city. Joe quickly becomes a champion, but his success leads him down the path of debauchery his mother feared, particularly due to the influence of the glamorous, gold-digging nightclub singer, Nina Madero. When Joe's mother intervenes and his father returns, Joe is forced to face a rematch and the truth about his unearned success.
